Tina Konec dedicated her most recent works to her grandmother, who, by planting trees around the house, in a way ensured that memories would be preserved for future generations. Cypresses, with their elegant, upright growth and longevity, carry deep meanings that have resonated with people for millennia. The works were created through the layering and overlapping of photography and drawing. Tracing paper, which allows the photographic image beneath to shine through the translucent surface, creates subtle transitions. Drawing and photography enter into both a visual and conceptual dialogue. By confronting two mediums – two images from different temporal layers – the artist constructs symbolic meaning on multiple levels. On one hand, photography functions as memory and an association with reality; on the other, drawing introduces a subjective, personal interpretation of that same memory. The viewer is invited to reflect on the relationship between the objective and the subjective, the external and the internal. Through layering, a dialogue emerges between past and present, raising questions of personal identity, personal history, and memory.
